Rolex explorer 39mm vs 36mm
K+,350.00 Updated in 2016, the modern 214270 Explorer is 39mm with an Oystersteel case and a black dial, the recognizable 3, 6, 9 markers (now with lume in them) and a refreshed handset that is both longer and a bit thicker. All of the lume is Rolex's proprietary Chromalight and it glows blue when things get dark.
My wrist is barely 7 inches and find the 216570 very comfortable. Love the legibiity, the second time zone and the blue lume which even seems to glow in daylight. But for pure comfort, the 39mm Explorer wins hands down. So, if I had a 16570 to compare with the 216570, I might very well prefer it.
I have a 7” wrist and wear a 34mm Air King as well as a 36” SMP. They both wear and look great on my wrist. When you wear it a while you won’t even think about the size. Your wrist size accommodates the Explorer well within reasonable means. I have owned a neo vintage 14270 Explorer as well as the 39mm (which I felt was larger than the original design and lacked the “style” of the 36mm), and finally my current Explorer, a 2021 era 124270 36mm on my 7.25” wrist. My wrist is 7,5 inch, flat top. I have both 36mm (14270) and 39 (214270 Mk II). The 14270 has a classic size, in 36mm it has the old school field watch vibe. I was attracted by the tritium dial/patina and lug holes on the case. No wrong choice here, it . Here's a 36mm on my 7.25" wrist. I believe you'll be fine with this size. Years ago I tried on a 39mm Explorer and it wasn't terrible either. For reference I've also included my former 39mm Oyster Perpetual on wrist.
Reference Number: 214270. Case Size: 39mm. Materials: Stainless Steel. Functions: Time w/ Running Seconds. Dial: Black w/ Luminous Hour Markers. Bezel: Fixed, Stainless Steel, Smooth Style. Crystal: Sapphire (Flat) Movement: Rolex Caliber 3132. Water Resistance: 100 Meters / 330 Feet. Strap/Bracelet: Oyster Bracelet (Stainless Steel) The Explorer's wrist presence is arrestingly pleasing. My seven-inch wrist feels balanced when I oscillate the anti-reflective coated sapphire top hat to peek into the almost Lovecraftian, inky black dial. But instead of cosmic dread, I am rejuvenated by .

As you can see in the picture above, the new Explorer 40 suits my 18.5cm (7.28″) wrist perfectly. Rolex increased the size to 40mm without losing the beautiful shape of the watch. It’s still an elegant model, now made available (again) for those with larger wrists. Updated in 2016, the modern 214270 Explorer is 39mm with an Oystersteel case and a black dial, the recognizable 3, 6, 9 markers (now with lume in them) and a refreshed handset that is both longer and a bit thicker.
